For years we carried a compact, glovebox-style personal jump starter: a handy little unit with a torch, a couple of USB ports and enough punch to get a flat car going. It did the job. But it relied on a lithium battery, and lithium has real limits: it ages, it fades in the cold, it needs babysitting on a charger, and in a hot car it is a fire risk you would rather not leave in the console.

The X500 uses the same ultra-capacitor technology Durst has proven in the field on mining trucks and heavy fleets, shrunk down to fit in your hand. Instead of storing charge in a lithium battery, it stores it in capacitors. That one change fixes almost everything people dislike about consumer jump starters:
- It will not go flat in the drawer. Leave it for months and it is still ready to start your car.
- It handles the cold. Capacitors deliver strong starting current at low temperatures, where lithium packs sag.
- No fire risk from a lithium cell. Safe to leave in a hot glovebox, boat locker or camper.
- It lasts. Capacitors take vastly more charge cycles than a lithium battery, so the X500 keeps working for years, not seasons.
- It starts from a battery that will not start the car, then recharges itself from the car. Connect it to a flat battery and it draws the remaining power out of that battery to start the vehicle. Leave it connected for a minute afterwards and it charges back up from the running engine, ready for the next start. It never has to go home to a wall charger.
